Why choose a creative job based in Manchester?

Did you know? In 2019, Manchester was named Europe’s second most creative city (after London)? The creative and culture industries then contributed £1.4 billion to the local  economy.  From the masterpiece murals you’ll see on the sides of buildings throughout the city to the beautifully designed local bars and restaurants, it’s definitely easy to see that Manchester’s community is a creative one.

Working amongst that community is really incredible, and if you’re a graphic designer looking to improve your own creativity, our in-house team of designers can help you do that. Currently, most of our team are still based in and closely around Manchester.

What makes Design Cloud a unique creative job?

If you’ve been searching for graphic design jobs in Manchester, you’ve probably already come across a whole host of creative and graphic design agencies. So, what makes us different? Well, we’re not just the average graphic design agency and we aren’t a branding agency. Instead, we’re a graphic design subscription service that teams customers with a dedicated graphic designer working through their design briefs each day for one flat-rate monthly fee.

It’s this business model that makes Design Cloud such a unique creative role for graphic designers looking for their next challenge. Not only are you working in an ever-growing team of professionals you can collaborate with and learn from, but you’ll have the opportunity to work on a whole host of creative projects that differ every single day. As a graphic designer at Design Cloud, you’ll be working with a few different clients each day so your to-do list will look different each day as you work on various design briefs for each individual brand.

Do you need to be a designer based in Manchester to apply for a role?

The short answer is no, anyone from across the UK can apply for a job at Design Cloud. We don’t ask you to be based in any one place, but it’s always an added bonus for those who apply who are closer to Manchester. The reason for this is because those based closer to Manchester will be able to get involved with quarterly work do’s, where it would be more of a challenge for those based further afield to get involved with these team social events.

Tips for applying for design jobs in Manchester

Tips for applying for design jobs in Manchester

From our experience of hiring for designer jobs based in Manchester, there’s a few things you’ll need to have ready no matter where you apply. In particular to join our graphic design team here at Design Cloud, we’ll need you to have a portfolio of your own work that we can have a look at before the interview. Your portfolio will help us to see the experience you have and what kinds of graphic design work you’ll be ready to hit the ground running with, so our perfect candidate’s portfolio includes lots of examples of the different styles of graphic design as well as formats that they’ve created in the past.

Another point to bear in mind when applying for the role of graphic designer here at Design Cloud is that we’ll need you to complete a short design task once you progress through the interview process. This design task helps us to gauge how quickly you can produce great graphic design work, which is a crucial part of working in the design team here at Design Cloud. We appreciate the time that all interested candidates give us as they progress through the interview process, and we won’t ever use any work designed in your final-stage design task throughout any promotion or work for ourselves.

Remote working with Design Cloud

Remote working with Design Cloud

Covid-19 taught us a few things, one of which being that remote work just works best for some of our team. After making the change of hiring purely remotely, we’ve been able to access creative talent from the whole of the UK and hire more designers in-house from across the country. So whether you’re living in the centre of Manchester or the centre of Plymouth, you can apply for a job at Design Cloud. All we ask is you have Wi-Fi, and we’ll provide the rest.

If you’re a social person and a little bit nervous about taking on a completely remote design job, we get it! As a team, we make sure to stay connected often so that we don’t miss out on the chatter you’d usually get if you were sitting next to your colleague in the office. To do that, we have a group slack channel that includes everybody in the business. In there you’ll find your colleagues having a chat, dropping inspiring articles or design work, and sharing their daily Wordle score (obviously.) On top of that, each department has their own individual team Slack channels and we meet together for a big group video call to start and end each day.

Our quarterly nights out are usually based in Manchester city centre, and we have a great time meeting up for food, drinks and activities. For Design Cloud employees that live further away, we try to occasionally shut up shop earlier in the day so that you can build in travel time to your working day and still arrive at a reasonable time.

Manchester’s Creative Industry

Although we might be biased, working for a manchester-based graphic design agency really is an incredible opportunity. In addition to being named Europe’s second most creative city, it also boasts a very impressive £5 billion digital ecosystem that is still growing. When you apply for a design job in Manchester, you can be confident that you’re joining a team that appreciates and prioritises creativity and design. And as a graphic design service ourselves, we know how important it is to work for a company that not only sees the great value of creativity, but actively encourages more of it amongst the team.
